In the Philippines, "Tilawi" means "Taste it!". At its most basic level, "Tilawi" is used in the kitchen or at the dining table. If a cook is making a stew, they might ask someone, "Tilawi ang sabaw kung parat ba" (Taste the soup to see if it's salty). However, it extends to trying new experiences, such as "tilaw sa kinabuhi" (to experience life). We started Tilawi with a simple mission: to bring the ultimate Filipino comfort food to the heart of South Holland. Our Lumpia recipe is more than just food, it's a family tradition passed down through generations. From my grandmother to my mother, and now to me, each roll carries a story of hard work, love and Filipino hospitality. Growing up, my mother made lumpia almost every day of the week; six (6) days out of seven (7). She would prepare between 300 and 400 pieces at a time, all by hand. Back then, we didn't have food processors or modern kitchen equipment. Everything was done the traditional way. As a child, my job was to chop and mince the ingredients. It was labor-intensive work that seemed endless at the time. But every batch taught me the value of patience, dedication, and quality. What amazed me most was that every single batch sold out. People kept coming back because they loved the flavor, the crispiness and the homemade quality that made our lumpia special. Fast forward to today, and that recipe remains exactly where it has always been in my heart and in my memory. Every time I make our Lumpiang Shanghai, I'm reminded of those busy kitchen days with my mother. The taste is just as I remember it: authentic, comforting, and simply unforgettable. At Tilawi, we're proud to share that same family recipe with you. Handmade, authentic, and crafted with the same care that has been passed down through generations. Because great food isn't just about ingredients; it's about family, tradition and the memories we create around the table. |
